There are journeys that take you to very real places. And then there are those that lead you towards a vision.
When I turned the ignition key of the BradPeat that morning, heading for Scotland and the Stirling region, I already knew this adventure would be different. Because this time, no stills awaited me at the end of the road. No century-old cellars. No master distiller busy tending his vats.
Today’s destination was Wolfcraig. A distillery still in the planning stages, yet a name that is already causing quite a stir in the world of premium whisky.
How is that possible?
The answer lies with two men. Two legends.
Before we even talk about Wolfcraig whiskies, we must mention the story that inspired them.
The name Wolfcraig has its roots in an ancient Scottish legend. It is said that Nordic invaders, advancing under cover of night to take a Celtic garrison by surprise, were betrayed… by a wolf cub.
By rousing the pack, their howls alerted the defenders, sparking a battle that turned in the Celts’ favour. Ever since, the place has been known as Wolfcraig — the wolf’s rock — a symbol of vigilance, power and rebirth, and, like me today, it is situated in Stirling.
An almost mythical story… perfectly in line with the brand’s philosophy: to reawaken the spirit of Scotch whisky.
As BradPeat came to a halt before the windswept hills, where Wolfcraig hopes one day to make its mark, two figures were already waiting for me.
A mischievous smile played on their lips.
As if they knew exactly what I’d come looking for.
“Welcome to Wolfcraig,” said Richard Paterson. “Or rather… welcome to what Wolfcraig has already become,” added Ian MacMillan.
In the world of whisky, distilleries are often the stars. Wolfcraig has chosen a different path, with two legends but a unique signature.
For I had before me two of Scotland’s greatest Master Blenders: Richard Paterson OBE and Ian MacMillan.
Together, they have over 100 years’ experience in Scotch whisky, as well as a bond forged over more than 40 years of friendship. An extremely rare collaboration in the industry and one that is deliberately unconventional.
Their ambition? To create a range called the “Hand Crafted Series”, showcasing craftsmanship at its very finest.
Richard Paterson is probably one of the best-known names in the industry. He is nicknamed ‘The Nose’ for his incredible sense of smell. His career has seen him create some of Scotland’s most renowned blends and become one of whisky’s greatest ambassadors worldwide. His flamboyant style, infectious passion and ability to describe a whisky even before it is tasted have made him a true living legend.
I remember the day he introduced me to the art of whisky tasting, guiding me to seek out the emotion behind the aromas and to understand the philosophy behind each blend even before raising the glass to my lips. It was a true lesson in whisky tasting, but above all a lesson in humility and passion. Meeting Richard again today in the world of Wolfcraig gave this discovery a particularly personal dimension.
Working alongside him is Ian MacMillan, another leading figure in the world of Scotch whisky who has held senior positions at several prestigious distilleries. Renowned for his technical rigour and exceptional talent in the art of blending, he is regarded by his peers as one of the foremost specialists in maturation and cask selection. His methodical approach perfectly complements Richard Paterson’s exuberance and legendary intuition.
Watching these two men exchange views over a whisky sample is almost a spectacle in its own right and a chance to witness a kind of alchemy at work.
Richard embodies instinct, theatricality and emotion, whilst Ian embodies precision, rigour and technical mastery. One narrates. The other analyses.
Even before its future distillery had been established, the brand decided to build its reputation on what is considered the pinnacle of the Scottish craft: blending.
“We rejected more casks than we kept,” Ian explains with a smile. Richard nods immediately: “Quality is never negotiable. ”
And that is probably where Wolfcraig’s DNA lies: producing in small quantities. Producing something rare. Producing something exceptional.
Unlike many brands, Wolfcraig prides itself on very limited small batches, privileged access to rare casks and a high malt content, with blends sometimes achieving a near 50/50 balance.
The word ‘premium’ isn’t a marketing strategy, but a guiding principle.
Wolfcraig isn’t building a range. It’s already building a collector’s catalogue.
Alongside the Wolfcraig 14 Years Old Deluxe Blend (First & Second Edition – Triple Sherry Cask), which we’ll explore below, Wolfcraig already offers a premium range:
- The Wolfcraig 33 Years Old Blended Malt: an ultra-exclusive edition limited to just 400 bottles. Created in partnership with the prestigious Rolls-Royce Club to mark a landmark anniversary, this whisky embodies elegance and refinement down to the very last detail. Conceived as a true luxury item, it stands out as much for the quality of its blend as for its meticulous design, making every bottle a collector’s item.
The Wolfcraig 35 Years Old Premium Blended Grain is an absolute rarity, with just 1,112 bottles produced. This exceptional whisky incorporates distillates sourced in part from distilleries that no longer exist, making it literally impossible to replicate. It is a unique expression of Scotland’s heritage, offering a depth and complexity that bear witness to the time and history from which it springs.
Finally, Wolfcraig isn’t limited to whisky and also offers an exceptional gin. Wolfcraig Gin, which won a gold medal at the 2023 Global Gin Masters, is crafted from 17 local botanicals harvested around Stirling. These include juniper, as well as orange and lemon zest and yellow cassia petals. The result is a modern, refined and particularly versatile London Dry gin that will appeal to both enthusiasts and mixologists alike.
And despite its youth, the brand is already preparing a 21-year-old expression (1,500 bottles), a 36-year-old blended grain (2,000 bottles) and many other future premium gems.
Wolfcraig is only just getting started… but is already looking ahead to several decades.
This is probably the question I’m asked most often.
At the time of writing, Wolfcraig does not yet have an official distribution network in France.
The bottlings are mainly sold in the United Kingdom and the United States.
For French whisky enthusiasts wishing to discover these bottlings, PeatDream has provided a link here to the specialist distributor Hard To Find Whisky (and you should make the most of it – there’s a special offer in July via the link below). This solution now makes it easier to access the various Wolfcraig expressions, whilst benefiting from more favourable shipping terms to France thanks to agreements negotiated via PeatDream.
A valuable gateway to discovering a brand that is still relatively unknown on this side of the Channel.
The brand’s first major commercial success.
A blend created after 14 years in three sherry casks carefully selected by Richard Paterson in Jerez at the Bodega San Andrés: Amontillado, Pedro Ximénez and Muscatel.
The result is a 14-year-old blended Scotch, bottled at 46.1%, non-chill-filtered and uncoloured.

La seconde édition conserve la même philosophie tout en modifiant l'équilibre entre les différents types de fûts de xérès.
Le procédé reste identique.
L'interprétation change. Une approche presque artistique du blending où chaque édition devient unique et impossible à reproduire.

When the last glasses had been emptied, Richard and Ian exchanged a knowing glance.
‘Well?’ asked Richard.
I looked out at the horizon one last time, as if the rest of my life depended on my answer… but I’ll leave you to judge for yourselves
The future Wolfcraig distillery hadn’t even broken ground yet, and yet… I felt as though I were leaving a place that was already very much alive.
For Wolfcraig is not yet a place; it is, above all, a philosophy – the coming together of two whisky legends and an obsessive pursuit of quality.
If Wolfcraig’s future is anything like its first bottlings, then connoisseurs of premium blended Scotch have probably found a new benchmark to follow very closely.
